This is where it starts

Two years ago I started my first blog. The reason was that I moved from Stockholm to Berlin to attend Technische Universität Berlin as an Erasmus exchange student for one year and I wanted to keep somewhat of a diary and a connection to friends and family in Stockholm. hannes.tyden.de was the simple solution.

Since then my situation has changed a lot. I am no longer an exchange student, but a developer at SoundCloud and my last visit to Stockholm proved to me that Berlin is now my hometown.

I’ve been working with web development for the last 10 years, but it is only the last year I have felt a need to publish my thoughts on the subject.

So this is where it starts, but will surely not be where it ends. Blogging does not really feel like the right format for me and for the last year I have been looking for alternative ways of publishing on the web. When I found Christian Neukirchens Anarchaia I knew what I was aiming for, both concerning content and format. A main focus on computing and development, but with a touch of culture, science and personal life.

This is a Wordpress blog, which is a good platform to start from but my experience is that it does not give you enough control. As for many other web developers, one of my first impressions of Ruby on Rails was DHH’s screencast in which he creates a blog in 15 minutes. This made me want to do the same, but when I heard about merb and I wanted to try that out, my vision became a Feather blog mainly driven by del.icio.us links. I do not know if this is the way it will end up, if it ever will. But right now this is my goal.

This is the first step and most likely the following posts will cover the transition from Wordpress to my own custom web publishing platform.
